SMART 2.0 Project
SMART 2.0 Project Overview & Merger

This set of artifacts reflects my role in leading the strategic planning and integration of two major statewide literacy initiatives into what is now SMART 2.0 (Striving to Meet Achievement in Reading Together). As SPDG Project Director, I supported the merger of the SMART project (formerly under Content and Curriculum) and the Cultivating Readers initiative (formerly under Special Education) into a single, unified framework designed to support K–3 literacy and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support.

The samples include planning tools and process documents that supported this merger: the project’s logic model, a comparative analysis of evaluation measures, an updated framework draft, and stakeholder engagement materials used to refine the model through collaborative input. The section also includes the finalized project overview and expectations guide, which introduced the new structure to participants and established clear goals, alignment, and supports for implementation.

Together, these artifacts demonstrate a comprehensive approach to strategic planning and systems alignment—showing how thoughtful design, cross-team collaboration, and iterative development can transform two separate initiatives into a cohesive, sustainable statewide project. From early-stage planning to stakeholder input and final rollout, this work reflects my role in guiding the development of a clear, responsive framework that supports both educators and long-term implementation goals.

Annual Professional Development Strategic Planning

This sample includes screenshots from a presentation I led as part of our department’s annual strategic planning process. As Director of Professional Development, I facilitated this session using a backwards planning approach to identify our goals for the year and map out key benchmarks to guide our progress. The slides illustrate how we structured the year intentionally—aligning outcomes with targeted supports and timelines to ensure each decision served a clear purpose for our members and the larger team.

Strategic Mapping of Course Instructional Design

These artifact samples represent a component of my instructional design internship, where I supported the review and refinement of online course content. Specifically, I created a course alignment map for Communications 101 to analyze how each instructional element—such as quizzes, assignments, and discussions—aligned with course learning outcomes and levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy.
By mapping each resource to its associated outcomes, I helped identify instructional gaps and areas for improvement. This analysis informed recommendations for strengthening course alignment and enhancing the overall student learning experience.

Strategic Planning and Development in Instruction

This collection of artifacts highlights my approach to intentional instructional design through backwards planning, outcomes-based alignment, and meaningful student engagement. The featured materials include an eight-week kindergarten math scope and sequence that outlines standards-based objectives, weekly focus areas, and clear criteria for assessing student understanding. Each component is purposefully sequenced to build conceptual knowledge and align with long-term learning goals.

Also included is a detailed first-grade science lesson plan centered on the solar system, with a focus on the moon. Designed through a backwards planning lens, the lesson integrates inquiry-based learning, academic vocabulary, and formative assessment to ensure mastery of key concepts.

Finally, this section includes examples of project-based learning from my classroom, showcasing how rigorous planning, student voice, and real-world connections can come together to deepen learning.

Together, these artifacts reflect my ability to design instruction that is intentional, strategically aligned, and responsive to both standards and student needs.
